God Jul og Godt Nytt År frå Michelle in Norge!!!!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from Michelle in Norway!!!!

It is five days to Christmas and I want to take the opportunity to wish everyone a wonderful Christmas:-)

Actually here in Norway it's only four days until Christmas...the reason being that Christmas begins Christmas Eve @ 5pm!!

It is wonderful to be here in Norway again. I have been very remiss at updating my blog so here's a rough guide to my itinerary (apologies for any bad spelling!!!)

I arrived in Norway on Saturday and got a lovely surprise at the airport.... Hege and Unni's Dad Ottar was at the airport to pick me up with Borge.

Saturday 15th: Hege and Unni's 40th Birthday party...a wonderful party with about 50 people.
Sunday 16th: the girls actual birthday. I went for a walk around Hovdebygda and then the celebrations continued again with the 'left overs' from the party in a much more relaxed way with everyone who 'popped by'.

I stayed with Hege and Sindre until Wednesday and then went to Hege's brother Geir and his wife's Kristi. They have lovely cabins they rent out and I have my very own one until Sat:-) ...when I go back to Hege's until I leave on the 27th December.
Saturday: cutting down a Christmas tree...
Sunday: decorating the tree (very traditional to dress the tree the day before Julaften (Christmas Eve) )   ....staying with Hege and Sindre and their son Borge (10 years)

Hello from Scotland

Hello from ScotlandJ

Kia ora from Glasgow!!!
J I’m staying with my friend Angela J She’s originally from Seattle but has been here about three years and has become a very good friend. We met each other in Wales in May at a Singles Retreat we both went to. Thanks for having me AngelaJ and for being such a great guide around Glasgow… and showing off the surrounding areas that you love and have wanted to go and visitJ hee heeJ
·       Glencoe
·       Oban
·       Stirling Castle

It’s been amazing weather here in Scotland!!! Glorious sunshine every day!!!! Thanks GodJ

OK…now for an (attempted BRIEF) overview of the last couple of weeks…

Well last week was all about the OLYMPICS!!!
Mon 30th July: Margie and I went to Eaton Downing to watch the rowing….go New Zealand. Was devastating watching the girls have to deal with their broken paddle…they’d been doing so well… overall there was some great crowd support for the Kiwis (hard to outdo the support for Team GB though!!!) It’s wonderful the way sporting events like this tie people together and build such a wonderful sense of community, even if it’s just a shared interest or the fact that you have some link be it through someone you know or somewhere you’ve been. I’ve taken my Silver fern flag in my daypack when I’ve gone into London and it’s made me so proud to be KiwiJ.

Sat 4th August: spent the afternoon in London soaking up the Olympic atmosphere. Chris was up from Wiltshire, so meet him, (his cousin)Maryisa and Colin and wandered around Southwalk…it was another glorious summer dayJ…yes summer finally has arrived! …There was lots of entertainment including dancing and singing celebrating Iraq Day. We walked and enjoyed the sights and sounds of London in full swing / later biked along the Thames and ended up down by London Bridge where the big Olympic rings hang so boldly and proudlyJ After the others left I stayed and as night fell it was the next best thing to actually being at the Olympic Stadium, as I could sit watching the track and field events on a large screen next to the Tower Bridge. The atmosphere was ecstatic…especially as Great Brittan took away three gold medals in one evening!!!! What was so pretty was also watching the Tower Bridge light up in Olympic colours and then at 10pm seeing the whole bridge flood lit. It was an amazing backdropJ There was so much activity happening there that I didn’t get a train home until after midnight….all the bridges were lit up along the Thames and it was a wonderful experience. There was also a Media Live Centre where you could watch different countries doing their live stream broadcasts of Olympic coverageJ Canada was especially fun to watch.
The rest of that week
…was spent catching up with friends before I went away on my epic eight weeks of travel…

Tuesday I met Maryisa (Chris’s Mum) in Oxford. We had a lovely time together doing the ‘Hop on Hop off’ open bus top tour and visiting an art gallery she thought I’d enjoy (which I did!). It’s definitely a place to come back to again..with it’s cathedral’s and universities, it’s steeped in literature and history. Thanks MaryisaJ I loved spending time together and you are all like family to meJ.

Speaking of family… the previous week and first week of the school holidays….I went out to visit James and Cathy Newbigging, really good friends of mine form Christchurch. It was so wonderful spending time with them….I stayed the night….and it was like being back in Christchurch, NZJ… Cathy knows me so well and I really appreciated being able to just hang out and spend time with her… and be part of the Newbigging clan…including sitting around the bonfire in the evening toasting marshmallows... J.

I feel so incredibly lucky that despite being so far away from all the rest of my family and friends in New Zealand (yes very blessed to not be totally by myself because here I do have Margie and Brian and PaulJ!) I have people here in the UK who make me feel incredibly loved and cared for. Thanks everyone!!!

This week:
"As the train got further and further away from London I felt freer and freer … finally I’m doing what I came over to do…to travel!!!!! Two of my foremost aspirations are to go up to Scotland and then across to Norway:-)...come and share the experience...!"
Mon 6th Aug: I arrived in Glasgow and have been staying with my friend AngelaJ and her housemates William and Rønnaug (Rønnaug is from Norway…and her uncle lives in Ørsta, the next villiage from Volda, where I used to live and will be going next monthJ!!!)

My itinerary:
This week Glasgow and surrounding areas (Angela has done such an amazing job showing me around…when I researched bus trips up through the Highlands she’d already taken me to some of their key places!!!!)
Tue 7th Aug: Angela and I took a lovely drive out into the Highlands and enjoyed a wonderful afternoon at Glencoe. Glencoe is known for its beauty and has a lot of history attached to it, including a massacre that time has not let people forget. Memories run exceedingly long here in Scotland! We donned our hiking boots and went for a walk…Angela had to put up with me constantly saying “This is so much like New Zealand!” …there was even fern growingJ.

From Glencoe we drove to the beautiful lakeside village of Oban and had dinner. The craziest sight was seeing two Jacob sheep being off loaded and lifted onto a small boat bound for an island. Asked what was special about the Joseph sheep (with it’s four horns and long tail …yes four horns and long tail!) the reply was, “The patterns on their coats!”…implication…they’ll make nice rugs one day!

Wednesday 8th Aug we took a walking tour around Glasgow and listened to the World Piping Championships ‘build up’ in Georges Square….before taking the train across to Edinburgh
…wow….Edinburgh is such a pretty city!
And there’s so much happening…the Fringe Festival is on and I can’t wait to go back there next weekJ.

In Edinbugh I also met Sam (from Invercargill) who complimented me on my distinctively Kiwi jade stone pendant. “Kia Ora!” I saidJ He was recognisable as Tangata WhenuaJ by his huge tattoo, pendent and brown skin. “Yhay for Kiwi’s!” J…when you run into a fellow Kiwi and you’re both far from home  you’re all family!!! Angela commented on it later…she thought we must’ve known each other…he introduced us to his partner and son and it was hugs and kisses on the cheeks all roundJ

Thursday 9th Aug I took the bus into Glasgow and explored by myselfJ….did the Glasgow version of the ‘Hop on Hop off’ bus tour then really enjoyed going through the Kelvingrove Museum and Art Gallery. The two Art Galleries I wanted to see was that (Thur) and the Burrell Collection at Pollack Park (Sat), between them I saw some wonderful examples of French Impressionist paintings. It was so yummy!!! Seeing them inspires me and I want to have a goJ.
There was Scottish Highland dancing back at Georges Square and then a band called ‘The Jiggers’ who entertained us with wonderful Scottish music and had some of the (80 year old Grannies) up doing a jig of their own!!!

Friday 10th Angela and I went to Stirling CastleJ. I learnt more about William Wallace, Mary Queen of Scots and lots of other things of great historical significanceJ.
Most of all though I enjoyed the magnificent views of the lowlands from the castle and just the amazing weather we’ve been having ever since I arrived!!! I especially enjoyed chilling out in the sun in the ‘Queen Anne Garden’ which hosted a quartet band all afternoon under lovely blue skies…(believe it(!!!) or notJ it’s been raining something terribly in Scotland the last two months so it’s been such a blessing have such glorious weather!)

Saturday 11th Aug I borrowed Angela’s bike and rode to Pollack Park. I had such a blast exploring the grand expansive grounds. I found lovely flower gardens and herb/vegetable gardens, had a picnic by the river outside the amazingly grand historic house (that Angela actually volunteers at) and enjoyed getting to know some of the locals (…when I can make out what some of them are saying!!!) I’m loving especially hearing the children talk and their accentsJ.

The Burrell Collection was an amazingly housed collection and sometimes even though you were inside it felt like you were outside in a forest…I really enjoyed the selection of paintings there that included Degas and Manet paintings and Rodin sculptures.

Sunday 12th Aug I’m looking forward to going to the West End of Glasgow. This is the very trendy arty area of Glasgow. It has lots of cool vintage type  shops and cafes… and is also home of the Botanic Gardens.  There have been some beautiful gardens I’ve been to (Stirling castle, Pollack Park and Garden) that make me think of Nana and how much she would love these places. So I treasure these places and the lovely special memories of similar places I’ve been to with herJ.

Looking ahead:
Next week…Monday13th I’m going across to Edinburgh and shall enjoy exploring Edinburgh and experiencing more of the Fringe Festival, and of course the Edinburgh Festival.
Shall keep you posted on my next
                      adventuresJ Good night/Good
                      morning!!!  Kia OraJ

Olympic and Holiday update...

Well it’s officially the school holidays here in Britian….yhay!!!! I’ve booked to go up to Scotland for about three and a half weeks, staying with my friend Angela in Glasgow, meeting a friend of Jacqui’s called Dave and staying with his friend Aileen in Edinburgh. Between these people and visits I also want to go up and visit the Highlands and do some hikingJ

From there I’m  planning to go across to Norway….where I'll be celebrating my birthday... which I'm excited about:-)

….so plans are coming together for my Scotland and Norway trips:-) I’ve been in contact with my cousin Gavin who lives in Bergen,
and my host mother Kirsti from Volda,
and Kirsti’s son Oystein (who’s just become a father!)
as well as Geir another host brother from my second host family:-) ...
I'm also hoping to catch up with one of my best friends from when I was in Norway whom I've discovered also lives in Oslo:-)...will keep you posted...her name is Hege:-)
Wow, seeing everyone after 23 years is going to be really amazing!

I’m hoping to take a bike up to Scotland,,, if I can take it on the train to Paddington. I've got most of my gear packed that I plan to take....with another cull to take place later in the week:-)

Saturday 28th July:
Been a very chilled out day here today:-)...I'd gone into London the last couple of days so it was nice to have a day at home.

Over view of the torch relay…
I took part in the torch relay on Tue… yes…actually took part in it!!! I was following it on my bike and caught up with it and a group of cyclists following directly  behind it….so I too went through the cordoned streets to everyone waving and camera’s aimed at us!!!

Then I saw it again Thursday as it made it’s way to Hyde Park with a girl called Jade from Brisbane. I then spontaneously decided to go to the Welcoming Party there... 'The Wanted' were really good:-)
I'd also been to one earlier in the week at Ealing Broadway…Paul, Margie and I had all biked there….and then it was such a beautiful bike ride home.

Was wonderful to see my sister Tracy's partner Mikie last night. He pilots for Air New Zealand and so far has made it to all the major British moments...Royal Wedding last year....Queens Jubilee this year and now the Olympic Opening Ceremony. I especially enjoyed getting to hang out with Mikie when we met up in London and tubed back together  to Margie and Brians to watch the opening ceremony:-)

Have been enjoying going to the galleries here in London immensely…saw Picasso a couple of times at the Tate Britian and Edvard Munch at the Tate Modern which I loved. He’s probably Norway’s most famous artist….when I go to Oslo I want to go to the Munch GalleryJ  When he died he left the entire contents of his house to the city of OsloJ
I also saw Damien Hurst (a very famous English artist) at the Tate Modern. Hadn’t been familiar with his work abut actually really enjoyed the exhibition. Finally for lovers of French Painting I also went to the Impressionists Exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts, which I really enjoyedJ

It’s so nice to be on holidayJ. I’ve have definitely found other aspects of being here in London hard and more recently had began to get quite  lonely at times. The nature of travelling and moving to a new place huh? That’s not to say I haven’t met some amazing people and I’m still so impacted by the cultural diversity here in London. There are really strong Indian communities…near and around here in Houslow….at Southall where I’d take the train from every morning to get part way to work. Very strong African communities…Somalian…. Eastern European….to name a few…

While I was working the six weeks out at Neasden (Wykeham Primary School…Behaviour Management 101 more like it!!!) I did very long days which meant I didn’t get to do some of the social things I’d been doing a couple of evenings a week…

Moral of that experience….don’t live further than a 40min journey home….mine could be an hour and a half on the way there with ok connections…but coming home….it was definitely a lot longer! It took me until Week  Five to cotton on that I could cut my travel time down or at least make it more enjoyable by biking part way and bussing the rest.

Health Diary…eaHeaSomething that contributed to  making my first four weeks days so much longer was I had for the first four weeks -intensive chiropractor visits to deal with one particualr  plan….with visits 3 times a week! it turns out I have a bucked neck….instead of a healthy ‘C’ curve at the top of my spine I have a ‘S’  curve….it can be treated but It’s very expensive and it takes three months of intensive treatment to get approx. 15 degree of realignment…I need 45 degrees…and did I say one month alone is 650 pound!!!

Some fun :-) ….I did go on a date a couple of weeks ago that my friend Lorna organised which was really lovely of her:-) Six of us went to the Dulwich picture gallery and afterwards ate pizza at  Piizza Express, 'Yum!' This was followed by an evening walk through the gallery park until we got kicked out as it was actually private property after the gallery shuts…something some bright red headed person didn’t realise when they said, “look we can go down this side path!!!”

And my most favourite things to do in London…next to going to the art galleries…is to explore London on the Borris BikesJ Love it!!! There are so many iconic places here in London that I get really in awe of the fact that I’m actually here!!!!

Well, that’s something to have chewed through for the next week or so… hope you're all enjoying the Olympics and look forward to catching up again soonJ

Lots of love,
Shell

PS And if you’ve messaged me to say Hi, or flicked me a Facebook message or even an email and I’ve not replied….it’s because my current secretary is always getting distracted… I’ve noticed with appreciation in her heart but short on time she  mentally makes notes to come back to answer you…and we know the outcome of that don’t we….(!!!) Did I miss summer?

How frustrating... I just spent an hour updating you all on my last five weeks and at the touch of a wrong button...it all disappeared:-(  ("...oh the benefits of saving as you go Michelle!!!")

Well I promise not to leave it another five weeks before I add another post but just wanted to say "Hi" to everyone and let you know you're in my thoughts. Thanks so much to those of who have been following my blog and persevered in checking... despite the absence of updates(!!!) and have found a way (Facebook!) to make comments.... understand it's a bit of a mission adding comments so appreciate the Facebook messages.  (Bless you Tracy :-)  ....her comment when I apologised for my rubbish levels of communication...."That's ok, you're living life:-) !)

Big hugs and love to you all,
Love from a slightly less exuberant and slightly more homesick Kiwi than five weeks
ago (seriously contemplating coming home for Christmas and a proper summer!!!)

Missing you all and hope you're all well :-)
Lots of love

This week
...as mentioned earlier have had a very quiet week this week. Rested heaps and feeling heaps better for it.
I wanted to make sure I'm well for my floristry stint tomorrow:-)
and for next week when I start this two week supply teaching position.

08-06 Friday's Health Diary:
Today I ventured out for the whole day for the first time this week (well since Sunday) for the day to Chiswick... planning to visit Hogarth House....but never made it there... a visit to the chiropractor revealed something that unfortunately isn't healthy... my spine:-(.. had been having some back discomfort so went to the chiropractor today as it would be my last chance before starting work....which is going to be what I will need to be doing...is working...because the chiropractor's bank  account is now looking far healthier! ...and will  so again on Monday ... I have to go back with my x-rays of my spine for him to decide a course of action to treat my spine...basically where a healthy spine has a curve at the top, mine has no curve...meaning there is no suspension in my neck...will find out more on Monday...

Tomorrow (Saturday):
I'm doing my muchly anticipated day working with Sam from 'Storm Flowers London'
This is her website...

www.bizflips.com/storm/index.htm
